Back when he taught large classes, I remember him telling us how he would sometimes design a multiple-choice exam where every answer was the same letter. I also remember him saying that one time he assigned students some reading and then came into the next class to ask if there were "any questions". No one asked any, so he just ended class right away. I think he said there were more questions the next class!

Dr. Jack Fessler was a huge mentor to me – we did not use the term mentor then, but now that the term is de rigeur, it is the perfect description of him. I credit him as the critical foundation of my career in both surgery and research. He not only trained me to be a large animal surgeon, but also in what it takes to be a Professor.
