Honored Mentor
William J. Donawick
DVM, DACVS
I had the good fortune to hear Dr. Donawick as he presented a guest lecture when I was a third-year student. At the time, my goal was to be an equine practitioner. Circumstances changed, and so did my focus. I ended up focusing on small animal surgery, but I never forgot Dr. Donawick’s guest lectures. His brief, seemingly small contribution resonates with me to this day.

Dr. Donawick was very influential in many young veterinarians’ careers. His innovation of new techniques and ideas made a big impression on many, and the profession is better off to this day for it. He taught attention to detail and to “think outside the box”, and challenged students, interns, residents, and fellow clinicians to always go the extra mile to come up with a solution to a problem or difficult diagnostic challenge. He made many contributions to the specialty of large animal surgery and to ACVS in many ways.

I am deeply grateful for Dr. Donawick, a founding father of equine surgery whose mentorship has shaped my career and countless others over more than 40 years. His pioneering contributions and dedication to excellence have set the foundation for modern equine surgery and strengthened ACVS. Bill’s leadership and ability to lift those around him have fostered a supportive community, inspiring generations of equine surgeons. I am honored to recognize his enduring legacy and profound impact on our profession.
