Honored Mentor
Louise Southwood
BVSc, PhD, DACVS
Dr. Southwood has been one of the most influential people in shaping the trajectory of my veterinary career. She has been there as a mentor, colleague, and friend throughout my residency, early days as a surgeon, through my training in ECC, and beyond. She is always available for advice on challenging cases, both in and out of the operating room. Louise has been so supportive of all aspects of my life, personal and professional, and continues to push me to achieve excellence in both areas. Her expertise in the field of equine gastrointestinal surgery, as a scientist and a surgeon, continues to influence not only the residents, fellows, and surgeons around her, but also the horses under her care.

Dr. Southwood fostered my love of emergency surgery. She is always available to her residents when they need guidance with surgical procedures or case management. She pushes her residents to grow outside their comfort zone.

Louise has been my faculty mentor since I started my faculty job at New Bolton Center. She has been an amazing role model, demonstrating the give-and-take that must occur to manage clinical, research, teaching, and family obligations and opportunities simultaneously. Her persistence and resilience and success have been inspiring.

Dr. Southwood has been an incredible professional mentor and personal friend. She has dedicated herself to clinical excellence and is a role model for female surgeons in everything she does. I am grateful to have worked with Dr. Southwood on numerous research projects and her mentorship and guidance on being a young clinical scientist have been invaluable. She is extremely deserving of this honor.

Louise Southwood has a wealth of emergency knowledge and was instrumental in the development of who I am today as a surgeon. She took a genuine interest in my surgical training and was invested in my academic progress. I learned an enormous amount from her in both the clinical and research setting and still manage my gastrointestinal cases using the principles she taught me.
