Advancing Public Awareness
Video comes to ACVS: Raising awareness of ACVS Diplomates and the veterinary surgery specialty
Raising awareness of Diplomates and the veterinary surgery specialty among animal owners and supporting collaborative relationships between Diplomates and primary care veterinarians are core objectives in the ACVS strategic plan.
ACVS has expanded its public-facing outreach efforts in several ways with the input and guidance of the ACVS Communication Committee.
The College recently added video to its efforts to maximize awareness.
Reaching animal owners and primary care veterinarians
The January 2026 Social Media Marketing Statistics Report indicates that video accounts for more than 60% of social media consumption, driving reach and engagement. ACVS will use videos in web-based marketing campaigns, via social media, and on the website. ACVS recently released its first video, through a pet’s eyes, that depicts the confidence and trust the animal and its owner feel when working with an ACVS Diplomate for surgical care. ACVS will use videos in web-based marketing campaigns, via social media, and on the website.
The College continues to add new Animal Health Topics to the ACVS website. These articles provide trusted, accessible information for animal owners seeking answers about surgical procedures. Every Animal Health Topic page links to the Find a Surgeon directory for owners looking for a veterinary surgeon. All animal health topics, both small animal and large animal, can be found here.
Many of the 100 Animal Health Topics are translated into Spanish. More are added every year.
The Find a Surgeon directory is prominently featured throughout the ACVS website, making it easy for animal owners and primary care veterinarians to locate an ACVS board-certified surgeon.
Visitors to the Animal Health Topics landing page–the second most frequently viewed section of the website–as well as all small and large animal health topic pages, have ‘Find a Veterinary Surgeon Near You’ button at the top of the page. At the end of each topic, additional ‘Find a Veterinary Surgeon’ and ‘What is a Veterinary Surgeon?’ buttons further guide users to the directory and provide helpful context about surgical specialization.
To ensure accurate listings, Diplomates are encouraged to keep their contact and practice information up to date. With ongoing social media and web-based marketing efforts driving increased traffic to the website, maintaining current information helps ensure potential clients and primary care veterinarians can easily find and contact you.
Using a digital marketing platform called Feathr, ACVS delivers advertisements directly into the browsers of individuals attending major events in both the primary care veterinary space and the animal-owner community. These campaigns deliver messages such as “Do you have a board-certified veterinary surgeon on your referral team?” and “What is a veterinary surgeon?”—helping to educate audiences, strengthen relationships with Diplomates and referring veterinarians, and increase public understanding of the role veterinary surgeons play in exceptional patient care.
An ongoing effort of the Communication Committee is to facilitate publication of Diplomates’ articles in the online magazine dvm360. Most recent articles are noted in website news, https://www.acvs.org/news/dvm360-new-articles.
How can Diplomates support this effort?
- Find a Surgeon directory: If you’ve opted out of the directory, opt back in! If you’re in the directory, check that your listing is current!
- Refer your animal owners to acvs.org and Animal Health Topics for information.
- Print Animal Health Topics and add them to your discharge paperwork. Animal Health Topic downloads are now ACVS-branded and more presentable when printed, improvements that ACVS made based on Diplomates’ feedback.
- Download the new Veterinary Surgeon logo and add it to your website, your email signature, business cards, and advertisements. The logo and guidance for its use are available here.
- Share with ACVS the unique ways you use Animal Health Topics in your practice. Send ideas to acvs@acvs.org.
