ACVS Fellowship Programs: Extension of Consideration for Founding Fellows

March 10, 2020

Acceptance of founding fellows is the first step towards the establishment of fellowship training programs. The ACVS wants to maximize inclusiveness and availability of fellowship training programs. Therefore, Extension of Consideration for Founding Fellow status has been made available for ACVS Diplomates with national and/or international recognition within the discipline at the time of the call for founding fellows who did not act on the original call for founding fellow applicants. Also eligible are Diplomates who applied for founding fellow status, fulfilled some of the founding fellow requirements, but lacked one or more of the stated explicit requirements and therefore were not accepted as founding fellows.

Through the Extension of Consideration for Founding Fellows, applications to obtain the status of ACVS Founding Fellow will be accepted from April 1 through September 30, 2020 in the following disciplines:

  • Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Small Animal
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery, Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery, Large Animal Soft Tissue Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery, Small Animal Orthopedics
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery, Small Animal Orthopedics

Applicants’ credentials will first be evaluated by the Fellowship Oversight Committee of the fellowship discipline to ensure that recognition and leadership in the discipline were established by the deadline of the original open call for founding fellow applications. For Minimally Invasive Surgery, the deadline was September 30, 2017; for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Small Animal the deadline was July 31, 2018. If found eligible for Extension of Consideration, the candidate must submit credentials to be re-evaluated within three years of the extension and, if the previously unmet requirements have been completed, the status of Founding Fellow will be recommended to the Fellowship Committee, who will review the recommendations and forward to the ACVS Board of Regents for final approval.

More information on Extension of Consideration for Founding Fellows in MIS and OMFS-SA, including the complete list of founding fellow requirements and the list of documents required for the application package submission, is available on the ACVS website.
