Mentoring students, residents, fellows, and faculty is an honor.  It is only exceeded by mentoring/raising your children and grandchildren although the techniques are the same.  In the Animal Cancer Center, we have a wall of trainee photos which I refer to on tours as the “The Wall of Fame”.  They have helped define veterinary oncology and surgical oncology worldwide.  I can think of no greater lasting legacy and I am proud of them all.

Steve Withrow left an indelible mark on all of us lucky enough to train under him. He expected excellence from himself and his mentees, yet

was always willing to admit a mistake. The greatest gift he gave me was to challenge the conventional wisdom and look for better ways to do things.
