Mentoring for me is always a partnership. I learned as much or more from my residents as they might have learned from me. We worked closely together, doing surgery, figuring out next steps, caring for patients and clients, teaching all kinds of students and learning how to get things done inside and outside the OR. With their enthusiasm, commitment, and diligence, we managed to keep life in perspective no matter the situation!

Elizabeth Stone was the role model that allowed me to think about becoming a surgeon. She always proved thoughtful, gave sound advice and led by example. Her willingness to tackle thorny issues in a rational, non-emotional fashion, coming up with practical solutions and effective implementation makes her a leader. I have tried to follow her example as I have moved into administrative positions.
