A mentor is one who helps another push themselves to excel. I ‘push’ by challenging residents to think, and to use their knowledge and common sense creatively. It gives me great pleasure when residents realize that they have what they need to solve most problems – they just have to think it through. It has been a pleasure to have been associated with the training of so many talented surgeons, and wonderful people.
