ACVS Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Small Animal (OMFS-SA)

Founding Fellows in OMFS-SA

A founding fellow in OMFS-SA is an ACVS Diplomate who has obtained additional training and experience, or has demonstrated expertise in OMFS, beyond surgery residency training and devotes a major portion of their professional effort to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of OMFS-SA patients. The founding fellow shows substantial programmatic effort in this field whether in academic or private specialty practice.

Extension of Consideration for Founding Fellow Status in OMFS-SA

Applications to obtain the status of ACVS Founding Fellow, OMFS-SA through the Extension of Consideration for Founding Fellows will be accepted April 1, 2020 - September 30, 2020.

Background
Acceptance of founding fellows is the first step towards the establishment of a fellowship training program. ACVS wants to maximize inclusiveness and availability of fellowship training programs. Therefore, an extension of consideration for founding fellow status is available for ACVS Diplomates with national and/or international recognition within the discipline at the time of the original call for founding fellows who did not apply by the deadline of July 31, 2018. Also eligible are Diplomates who applied for founding fellow status, fulfilled some of the founding fellow requirements, but lacked one or more of the stated explicit requirements and therefore were not accepted as founding fellows.

Eligibility criteria
Diplomates demonstrating leadership in OMFS-SA who did not apply for founding fellow status because they did not meet the scholarly activity requirements or who applied but did not meet the criteria for founding fellow status must apply for an extension of consideration by September 30, 2020.

Application process
A detailed list of founding fellow requirements, as well as a list of all the documentation that must be submitted within the application package, can be found in the
Extension of Consideration for Founding Fellows: OMFS-SA. The application must be submitted in a single package to acvs@acvs.org by September 30, 2020. For your convenience, the program fee can be paid online.

Establishing an ACVS Fellowship Training Center for OMFS-SA

As of March 2020, there are no approved training centers for OMFS-SA. To establish a training center for the ACVS OMFS-SA Fellowship Program, please complete the application form.

Fellow candidates cannot register until a training center has been established for this discipline. Both the fellow candidate and the training institution must comply with the Minimum Standards for ACVS Fellowship Training Program in OMFS-SA. Fellow candidates must submit the training registration form and registration fee to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) office within 30 days of starting the fellowship training program.

For questions about the fellowship program, contact the ACVS office or Dr. Sandra Manfra Marretta, chair of the OMFS-SA Fellowship Oversight Committee.

Volunteering to serve on the fellowship oversight committees

The fellowship oversight committee (FOC) is responsible for monitoring the fellowship program and for providing status reports to the Fellowship Committee on training centers, training candidates, and requests for program modifications. Serving on the fellowship oversight committee is a three-year term.

Fellows interested in serving on the FOC should notify the ACVS office or Dr. Sandra Manfra Marretta, chair of the OMFS-SA Fellowship Oversight Committee.
