Dr. Timothy C. McCarthy opened his Surgical Specialty Clinic for Animals in 1985. The clinic flourished as a free-standing, referral-only surgery practice that was listed twice in the Oregon Business Journals 100 fastest-growing, privately held corporations. During that time, endoscopy became Dr. McCarthy's main focus and primary expertise. All diagnostic endoscopy, interventional endoscopy, minimally invasive soft tissue surgery and arthroscopy procedures currently utilized in small animal practice were performed on a routine basis. Dr. McCarthy pioneered the application of many minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic techniques that are now, or are now becoming, the standard of care. These range from simple techniques such as transurethral cystoscopy , rhinoscopy and oscopy, to more difficult and challenging techniques including arthroscopy and transabdominal nephroscopy.
