Dominic Marino, DVM, of Long Island Veterinary Specialists has performed hip replacement surgery on a 10-month-old tabby found by staff at the Humane Society of New York in midtown Manhattan. Hip replacement in cats became possible within the last few years as surgeons learned to operate on smaller animals, says Dr. Marino. The surgery, which included fixing a torn knee ligament, will give Winston a chance to walk normally.

David Anderson

David E. Anderson, DVM, MS, of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University has successfully preformed surgery to replace the natural ligament of a 1,500 lb. cow with man-made nylon monofilament, a solid material about the diameter of a coffee straw. The cruciate ligament is a dense tissue that connects the bones in the knee joint. Injuring it can be career-ending and often life-ending - until now, Anderson says.

S. Kathleen Salisbury, DVM, MS, of the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine has been chosen by the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) to receive the 2007 National Carl J. Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Teacher Award, the most prestigious teaching award in veterinary medicine in the United States. The award will be presented at the AAVMC annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, March 16, 2008.

Philip A. Bushby, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVS, has been named Mississippi’s Marcia Lane Endowed Professor in Human Ethics and Animal Welfare. This is MSU’s first endowed professorship in animal ethics and welfare. The position was created with a $500,000 supporting gift from benefactor Marcia Lane, a California native. Dr. Bushby is currently the service chief of primary care at the college’s Animal Health Center.

Priti Karnik, DVM, has donated surgeries to two puppies born with cleft palates. The puppies, Magic and Merlin were only three days old and about five ounces each when they were found in a shelter. Unable to eat on their own, they had to be tube fed. Now, three months old, they have undergone their first surgeries and are "on the road to normal, happy lives.”

Sheila W. Allen, the interim dean of the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine, is the college’s permanent dean.

Allen served as interim dean since March 1, 2006, following the retirement of former dean Keith W. Prasse. She was associate dean for academic affairs and acting head of the department of small animal medicine and surgery before becoming interim dean. She is the second female dean of a veterinary college in the country.

Claude A. Ragle, DVM, received the Distinguished Service Award during the American Association of Equine Practitioners' (AAEP) 52nd Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas. The award, given to an individual who has provided exemplary service to the AAEP or a similar organization to the benefit of the horse, horse industry or the profession of equine veterinary medicine, was presented to Ragle yesterday (Dec. 5) during the President's Luncheon.

As a result of his dedication to the veterinary profession, Ragle has been the recipient of the Butler Large Animal Award at Michigan State University; the Veterinary Medicine Graduating Class "Hooder" at Washington State University; and the General Wayne O. Kester/AAEP "Tip of the Hat" Award for the Equine Clinicians Network, of which he is the founder and moderator.

Dale Bjorling, Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, received the 2006 Waltham International Award for Scientific Achievement during the 2006 World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) meeting held in Prague, Czech Republic October 11-14. In conjunction with this international award, he presented a lecture entitled "Basic Mechanisms in Urinary Tract Infection-Role of Surgery." Dale currently is a member of the ACVS Board of Regents and has been a Diplomate since 1985.

Ghery Pettit, the retired 26 year head of small animal surgery at the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, received the 2005-06 Phi Kappa Sigma Alumnus of the Year Award in July. The honor is the highest award for professional accomplishment and commitment to the fraternity. He is the twenty-second recipient of the award since it was first given in 1978. Dr. Pettit has served as been with the fraternity since 1981 when he began as an advisor and went on to serve as president and as a member of the board of directors. Past recipients of the award include Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell and and astronaut G. David Low.
