ACVS - The First 25 Years
It was almost 50 years ago that Mark W. Allam, one of the co-founders of ACVS, talked to a group of veterinarians about forming a certifying agency to give those willing to do postgraduate work in surgery some means of recognition for their effort.
In 1990, Ghery D. Pettit, one of ACVS’ Charter Diplomates and former historian for the College, published “The American College of Veterinary Surgeons: The First Twenty-Five Years” in Veterinary Surgery.
Dr. Pettit recently said, “I wonder if those men had any idea of what ACVS would look like today.” Hard to say, but we hope you will enjoy reading (or re-reading!) Dr. Pettit’s article to see what ACVS was like in its early years.
