2010 Research Grant Recipients


The ACVS Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2010 research grants. The ACVS Research Committee received 18 proposals for three grant programs. These included 7 proposals for the Surgeon-in-Training Grant program, 5 proposals for the Diplomate Clinical Research Grant program and 6 proposals for the Minimally Invasive/Minimal Access Surgical Research Grant program, sponsored by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. The ACVS Foundation Board of Directors and Board of Trustees thank Ethicon Endo-Surgery for its continued, generous support of this valuable research program.

For the Surgeon-in-Training Grant program, three proposals were funded:

  • Torsional and Compressive Stability of the Carpus After Removal of the Second Metacarpal Bone. Katie Amend, Colorado State University
  • Development of an Inexpensive Method for Processing Platelet-rich Plasma in the Horse.  Robin Fontenot, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
  • Prevalence of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococci in Dogs Presenting for Orthopedic Surgery at a US Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Collin Wolff, Texas A & M University

For the Diplomate Clinical Research Grant program, one proposal was funded:

  • Pharmacodymanics and Monitoring of Multi-dose Low Molecular Weight Heparin Therapy in Healthy Horses. Kira Epstein, University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc.

For the Minimally Invasive/Minimal Access Surgical Research Grant program, one proposal was funded:

  • Comparison of Transvaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery and Laparoscopy for Elective Bilateral Ovariectomy in Standing Mares. Timothy Lescun, Purdue University
