2009 Research Grant Recipients 


The ACVS Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2009 research grants. The ACVS Research Committee received 34 proposals for three grant programs. These included 21 proposals for the Surgeon-in-Training Grant program, 6 proposals for the Diplomate Clinical Research Grant program and 7 proposals for the Minimally Invasive/Minimal Access Surgical Research Grant program, sponsored by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. The ACVS Foundation Board of Directors and Board of Trustees thank Ethicon Endo-Surgery for its continued, generous support of this valuable research program.

For the Surgeon-in-Training Grant program, four proposals were funded: 

  • Effects of a Modified Organ Transplant Solution on Recovery of the Equine Large Colon After Ischemic Injury. A. Sarah Graham, University of Florida
  • In Vivo 3-D Kinematics and Joint Contact Mapping of the Normal Canine Elbow. Reunan Guillou, Michigan State University 
  • Rapid Expansion of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stromal Cells and Tendon-derived Progenitor Cells in Three-dimensional Culture. James A. Brown, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University 
  • Cystoscopic and Histopathologic Evaluation of Submucosally Injected Polyethylene Glycol Based Hydrogel and Bovine-cross-linked Collagen in the Canine Urethra. Julia P. Sumner, University of Wisconsin-Madison

For the Diplomate Clinical Research Grant program, two proposals were funded:

  • Biomechanical Properties and Microangiographic Analysis of a Novel Pattern of Primary Repair for Equine Tendon Lacerations. Jennifer G. Barrett, Virginia Tech
  • Contribution of Hypoxia to Impaired Wound Healing in Horse Limbs. Christophe Céleste, University of Montreal
  • The Effect of Warm Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury on Renal Function and Vasoactive Peptide Expression in Feline Kidneys. Chad Schmiedt, University of Georgia 

For the Minimally Invasive/Minimal Access Surgical Research Grant program, two proposals were funded: 

  • DGEMRIC Glycosaminoglycan and Arthroscopic Cartilage Scores Accurately Predict Prognosis in Dogs That Have Arthroscopic Removal of a Fragmented Coronoid Process. Mike Conzemius, University of Minnesota
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery in Veterinary Practice: A Survey of Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Robert J. Hardie, University of Wisconsin-Madison

2008 Research Grant Recipients


The ACVS Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2008 research grants.  The Research Committee reviewed a total of 21 new or resubmitted research grant proposals for 2008.  There were 4 Diplomate Clinical Research Grant proposals, 12 Surgeon-In-Training (SIT) Grant proposals and 5 proposals for the Minimally Invasive/Minimal Access Surgical Research Grant program, cosponsored by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc.  The Board of Trustees of the ACVS Foundation thanks Ethicon Endo-Surgery for its continued generous support of its valuable research program.

For the Surgeon-in-Training Grant program, three proposals were funded:

  • Evaluation of Two Strategies to Improve Adhesion of Chondrocytes on Chitosan Scaffolds.  Guillaume Ragetly, University of Illinois
  • Laser Vaporization of the Dorsal Turbinate as an Alternative Method of Accessing and Evaluating the Paranasal Sinuses. Samantha L Morello, University of Pennsylvania
  • Evaluation of the Use of Copper-Coated Vascular Stents to Promote Complete, Gradual Occlusion of the Jugular Vein in a Canine Model: Application for Use in Minimally Invasive, Gradual Occlusion of Portosystemic Shunts in Dogs. Michelle Nanfelt, Colorado State University

For the Diplomate Clinical Research Grant program, one proposal was funded:

  • Effect of Synovitis on Amikacin Concentrations Following Intravenous Regional Limb Perfusion. Kira L Epstein, University of Georgia

For the Minimally Invasive/Minimal Access Grant program, cosponsored by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc., one proposal was funded:

  • Randomized Controlled Trial for One-Stage Laparoscopic Correction of LDA in Dairy Cattle: Benefit to Production. Susan Fubini, Cornell University

2007 Research Grant Recipients


For the Surgeon-in-Training Grant program, three proposals were funded:

  • Effects of Exercise and Osteochondral Fragmentation on the Concentration of CTX II Synovial Fluid and Serum of Horses. Orlaith Cleary, University of Florida
  • In Vitro Assessment of Aminoglycoside-Based MRSA Regional Perfusion Therapy. Kimberly Johnston, Michigan State University
  • The Effects of Autologous Conditioned Serum on the Metabolism of Equine Tendon Fibroblasts In Vitro. James Cissell, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

For the Diplomate Clinical Research Grant program, one proposal was funded:

  • Is Synovitis Related to the Presence of Bacterial DNA Within the Stifle Joint of Dogs with Inflammatory Arthritis and Associated Degenerative Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture? Peter Muir, University of Wisconsin-Madison

For the Minimally Invasive/Minimal Access Grant program, cosponsored by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc., one proposal was funded:

  • Laparoscopic Incisional Hernia Repair in Horses. John Caron, Michigan State University

For the Surgeon-in-Training Grant program, three proposals were funded:

For the Diplomate Clinical Research Grant program, two proposals were funded:

For the Minimally Invasive/Minimal Access Grant program, cosponsored by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc., one proposal was funded:

  • The Effect of Tibial Tuberosity Advancement on the Canine Cranial Cruciate Ligament Deficient Stifle. Peter Shires and Jonathan Miller, VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech 

For the Diplomate Clinical Research Grant program, one proposal was funded:

  • Transection of the External Branch of the Cranial Laryngeal Nerve Results in Vocal Fold Collapse in Exercising Horses. Susan Holcombe, Michigan State University

For the Minimally Invasive/Minimal Access Grant program, cosponsored by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc., two proposals were funded:

  • Laparoscopic Ablation of the Nephrosplenic Space Using Polypropylene Mesh. Eric Parente and Kira Epstein, University of Pennsylvania 
  • Comparison of the Nd:YAG Surgical Laser and the Remorgida Bipolar Electrosurgery Forceps in Canine Laparoscopic Ovariectomy. Jolle Kirpensteijn, Utrecht University

For the Diplomate Clinical Research Grant program, two proposals were funded:

  • Urinary Bladder Infection in Dogs with Urinary Bladder Dysfunction Secondary to Intervertebral Disc Herniation Managed with Manual Bladdre Expression, Intermittent Catheterization, or Indwelling Urinary Catheterization. Loretta Bubenik, Loisiana State University

For the Diplomate Clinical Research Grant program, two proposals were funded:

  • The Role of the Non-selective Cyclooxygenase Inhibitor Flunixin in Endotoxin Absorption across Ischemic-injured Equine Small Intestine.   Julia Tomlinson, North Carolina State University
  • Progression of Healing in Partially Disrupted Canine Cruciate Ligaments with and without Intra-articular Protection.   Mandi J. Lopez, University of Wisconsin-Madison

For the Surgeon-in-Training Grant program, four proposals were funded:

For the Minimally Invasive Surgical Research Grant Program, cosponsored by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc., one proposal was funded:

  • Comparison of Postoperative Pain following Ovariohysterectomy via Harmonic Scalpel-Assisted Laparoscopy or Standard Celiotomy in Dogs, Otto I. Lanz, Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

For the Diplomate Clinical Research Grant program, two proposals were funded:
